Musica invisible by Cecilia Arditto is “based on the exploration of new possibilities for English horn” and calls for the performer to speak through the instrument: passages from L. Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” (“Off with bis head!’*) combine with tapping on the instrument. You’re there with Alice, acutely aware of the Mad Hatter’s pocket watch marking the passage of time you don’t have. I´d urge students to program this work on their recitals: your audience will be wide-eyed with the spell this piece casts and no one will soon forget the performance.

I fell in love with this piece by Cecilia Arditto three years ago and have been looking for the right excuse to perform it. This first movement uses writings from Da Vinci’s journals about drawing women, saying how they should be drawn with “their legs close together, their arms closely folded,” and lots of other *absolutely wonderful* things. It also intersperses quotes from the song Mona Lisa by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston, which give it an eerie, almost old-timey-radio effect. I really love this movement, but in videos I’ve watched, men who perform it often raise their voices to a falsetto-y register. Though this makes the words slightly more audible, due to the timbre of the voice, the vibe I get from it more than anything is mocking. Though I probably wouldn’t do it this way outside of face the mirror, in this performance I will be keeping that tone and making it a self-mocking thing: my character doesn’t want to be seen this way, but she knows that she is, and using these othered words is a way of deflecting from her genuine trauma.

Cecilia Arditto’s The Dearest Dream was the most effective of all, exploring the harmonic spectrum of a single pitch that was coloured and punctuated by the “found” sounds of everyday objects – electric fans, a sweeping broom. A straightforward idea, stylishly executed.

The most striking example of the break-over and extension of the performing medium was offered by Cecilia Arditto in Split Piano for piano duo (very enthusiastically performed by Piano Duo LP Sonja Lončar and Andrija Pavlović) “for one hand, a light bulb and sound objects”, where switching the light on and off was subjected to clear rhythmization, and the lamp/bulb was incorporated in the total performing body, not losing its primary function of lighting/blacking out the surroundings.

Cecilia Arditto’s Música Invisible is in three movements (Sfumato, Chiaroscuro, and Anamorphosis) and uses both flugelhorn and trumpet. Each work involves the use of extended techniques such as singing while playing, extreme pedal tone melodies, and putting the bell of the trumpet into a bowl of water. Regardless of the techniques, which are intrinsic to the sound worlds of the pieces and not mere gimmicks, the music is haunting and meaningful. Each gesture is given time and space to develop and mature and, at about 12 minutes, I could stand to listen to a whole lot more.

Cecilia Arditto: Música invisible (Libro cuarto: trompeta & flugelhorn, I, II, III)
A fabulous piece that explores the soft, more feminine side of the trumpet and Flügelhorn, inspired by “The Perspective of Disappearance”, a chapter of the notebooks of the great artist and polymath Leonardo da Vinci. It was composed for Amy Horvey by this interesting young Argentine composer now living in Amsterdam.
